Review: Uberlube Silicone Lubricant

I’ve been hearing whispers (and shouts) for a long time that Uberlube is one of the best silicone lubricants on the market, so naturally I wanted to give it a go for myself. I contacted to ask about a sample and a couple of weeks later a package arrived. I was expecting one bottle, but I opened up a box filled with samples and product information. I was definitely not expecting the huge haul of products that I received, but I was exceptionally grateful at their generosity. Inside the box I found several sachets, five vials, a travel case and insert of 15ml in both silver and black, two refills of 15ml for those cases, a 50ml bottle and a 100ml bottle. I may have enough silicone lube for the next two years, but is it the holy grail it’s made out to be? Read on to find out or skip to the quick review for the facts.

Uberlube Silicone LubricantThe presentation of Uberlube is understated and classy. The 50ml and 100ml bottles are made from glass and resemble premium fragrance bottles. I think they are quite gorgeous and wouldn’t look out-of-place left out on a dresser. The Good to Go sets (the travel case and 15ml inserts) are stylish and simple. If you’re like me and like to always be prepared for the throes of passion, throw one of these in your handbag, make-up bag, travel bag, every bag!

Before I go any further, Uberlube is a silicone based lubricant so caution and avoidance should be used with other silicone based products. You should also be cautious with clothing, surfaces and bed sheets as silicone lubricants can stain these things. I always put a waterproof sheet or old towel down before using this product, just in case. I haven’t had any issues with staining so far, but it’s always a potential downside to these products. If any does get on a surface, remove it as quickly as possible with something like Pjur’s Med Toy Cleaner.

The website claims that this product is odourless, but I would air on the side of disagreeing. I have found that silicone lubricants often have a medical (reminds me of hospitals) scent and that was the case with Uberlube. It isn’t noticeable unless quite close to it and it’s certainly not overpowering or a negative scent, but there’s definitely some sort of odour to it. It does disappear once it’s made contact with the skin and been rubbed in, so I can see why it would be described as scent-free. As for taste, I haven’t done so, but my partner says that it’s not unpleasant, but he wouldn’t recommend it. He suggests using something water-based and flavoured for oral sex and switching to silicone later.

Uberlube contains no parabens, glycerin or propylene glycol, so there’s nothing in there deemed majorly problematic. Some people do have issues with tocopheryl, so air on the side of caution if you have sensitivities. My partner and I both have sensitive skin and can flare up with certain products, so we did a patch test beforehand. There were no issues and I actually thought this lubricant was one of the most natural feeling silicone lubes I’ve ever come into contact with.

We were both extremely pleased with the consistency of this lube as it definitely pushed all the right buttons for us. It mimics natural lubrication, glides in a carefree manner and removes any unwanted friction or discomfort. It’s thin, but not super runny or tacky and I feel that it’s perfect for vaginal use. I can use a very small amount during penetrative sex and feel perfectly comfortable whereas some water-based lubricants require ridiculous amounts to get to that point. I will say that I don’t feel that it’s thick enough for anal sex in our case, but my partner is on the larger side and I prefer something thick and gel-like for anal play. I can use this with small metal or glass plugs, but dildos and penetrative anal sex are off-limits.

Not only is it fantastic for vaginal sex, it can also be used in the shower or bath. Silicone lubricant is the only type that doesn’t instantly wash away with water, making aquatic fun is possible. It doesn’t simply rinse off the skin after use like a water-based product would, and it’s not always the easiest to remove. The process usually involves firm scrubbing to remove all traces and even then, I always seem to miss a spot! Toys (usually glass, ceramic or metal) that have been used with silicone lubricant need a careful, thorough clean too, especially if they are textured. I usually opt for the Lovehoney Fresh Wipes to remove the majority of the residue, then scrub under running water afterwards to finish the job.
