This is the first time that I’ve experienced an oil-based lubricant because most aren’t vagina friendly, but this one is, as it’s ph balanced, plant-based and free from glycerin. It is the only oil-based lubricant that I’ve ever considered using and after this experience, it’s probably the only oil-based lubricant I’ll ever try. My partner and I do not use condoms, at least not on a regular basis and they’re not for protection against pregnancy, so this lubricant was a safe choice for us, but if you require condoms then I’d stay away from this product as it’s not condom-friendly. If you want to find out if I loved or hated it, then read on or simply jump to the quick review to find out the facts.
The Yes Oil-Based Vanilla Lubricant arrives in sleek cardboard packaging, with no huge fonts dictating the product function, so it could be left out without causing any fuss. The tube is just as discreet as the outer packaging and could easily be mistaken as a moisturizer or hand lotion. It features a safety seal around the cap for reassurance that it hasn’t been opened or tampered with. To dispense this product, you simply flip the cap and squeeze the tube. It doesn’t come out too quickly, get messy or cause waste due to the consistency.
Fresh from the tube, the Yes Lubricant is primarily white in appearance, although I did notice a slight yellowish tint to the colouring in natural lighting. I thought it looked bubbly and greasy, resembling butter icing almost, but slightly thinner. I wasn’t impressed by the appearance, but I wanted to give the lubricant a chance so I proceeded to do a patch test. My partner and I both have sensitive skin, so I always apply a small amount to our elbows before we use it on our intimate areas. I didn’t think we’d have a reaction to this as it’s one of the most organic lubricants in existence and I was right, as neither of us came up in a rash or developed itchiness. I wasn’t fond on the texture at this point though and when I went to scrub it off, I felt a slight greasy residue left over which needed a second trip to the bathroom to remove.
I did like the scent that hit me as I applied the product to our skin though, I could definitely pick up on the wonderful scent of vanilla, which is the main reason why I chose this product in the first place. My partner had a taste of it and although he said it didn’t taste bad, the texture was off-putting, so he wouldn’t use this for oral sex. He describes the taste as starting as subtle vanilla, ending in utterly buttely. The oil doesn’t grease up in the mouth to the point of it being unusable for that purpose, but your face (and/or) hands will get covered in the stuff during the act, so we’ll be sticking with flavoured water-based products.
We then decided to try it for penetrative sex, where the consistency improved as the product was rubbed into the skin, actually becoming quite slick. It reduced any friction and discomfort that I may have felt without it, making sex really comfortable, but my partner couldn’t get over the texture of it. He is fussy regarding texture and he plainly said that this was just too greasy for his tastes. After our session had finished, I began feeling the same sticky aftermath as I did with the patch test and I think this is off-putting. I had expected some stick with it being oil-based, but for me, it’s just too much. I like to be able to sleep after sex, but I can’t if I use this as I feel the need for a long shower.
Overall, I think we’ve come to the conclusion that oil-based lubricants just aren’t for us. I would rather go for a thick water-based lubricant or a high quality silicone such as Sliquid Silver. I couldn’t get past the greasy after-feel and my partner just wasn’t happy with the texture or the appearance of this product. It is fit for purpose as a lubricant and does the job, but it’s not a product that we’ll be purchasing again.
